Handspun Pashmina

The Pashmina wool comes from a distinct breed of goats found at an altitude of above 14000 feet in the plateau of Changthan in Ladkah, Kashmir. The wool is collected, combed and soaked in a mixture of rice and water to make it softer. This is followed by the process of hand spinning the yarn on wheel called charkha to make fine thread. The pashmina is woven on handlooms

The craft of hand spinning of these tender threads is practiced by women in villages across the valley around Srinagar. The craft is slowly vanishing with most of the wool being sent to mills in the mainland for spinning. Our efforts are directed to provide optimum benefit to the women still practicing this craft despite the hardships.
